The process of submitting content, regardless of publisher, usually takes between 2-3 weeks so that the content can be tested for any major bugs (to keep things from bricking your console or deleting all of your data accidentally (as well as to make sure there aren’t any loopholes to get into the system through the software).

While there was no word on when the actual content was submitted, it appears the beta is still slated to land sometime next month.

A select few thousand users worldwide will have access to four multiplayer maps, 2 game modes and 3 vehicles alongside 12 playable classes. The beta will slowly ramp up the number of users it allows as the beta goes on, so if you don’t get in immediately, don’t feel bummed.

Anyone interested in participating in the beta can head over to the official website and put in their application for the initial stage of the beta beginning in a few weeks.

Dan Amrich, Activision’s Social Media Manager, recently updated his blog to point out that the beta will not be arriving on the PC and will be reserved for 360 and PS3 players only. PC gamers will have full access to the finished product when it is released on November 8 alongside Modern Warfare 3.

From the day of its founding many centuries ago, Rome has never known a lasting peace. The land was settled by Aeneas amidst conflict, and the city’s foundations were laid amidst brotherly strife, Romulus even slaying his own brother Remus during an argument. Even the Roman gods have fought many wars, some amongst themselves (such as the Trojan War), and some against other foes — including the Titanomachia, when the young Olympian gods fought the Titans and their allies.

Now, once again Rome finds itself amidst conflict, surrounded on all sides by foes. To the east, war against the Samnites rages on; to the west, Faliscan nationalists rebel against the Romans who now occupy their homeland; in the south, the Greek colonists of Magna Graecia are becoming emboldened, reaching ever closer to Rome; in the north, disheartened Etruscans — their armies crushed by Rome — are resorting to necromancy and infernal pacts in a desperate bid for power; and in the distant snow-capped mountains of Gaul, the tribes who sacked Rome a generation ago are rising once again.

With the Roman Legions spread thin to deal with foreign enemies, domestic strife is also on the rise. Bandit gangs like the Caedes and Pugnus make it dangerous to travel the roads, while pirates like the Wreckers and Pistrix make sea travel no safer a prospect. Even the Roman Senate is in danger, with many seats in the Curia filled with the corrupt and power-hungry.

But Rome’s enemies are not all human; indeed, things are look grim in the immortal realm as well. In Hades, the bonds that bind the Titans in Tartarus are weakening, resulting in an abundance of deadly beasts appearing on earth — the likes of which have not been seen since the time of myth. Most troubling of all is the sudden appearance of a strange cult calling themselves Telchinists. Their goal is nothing less than to summon the Telchines, the ancient Sorcerer Gods who sided against Olympus during the Titanomachia.

During that ancient war, the Olympian gods were very nearly defeated by the Titans and the Telchines; only the intervention of great heroes like Hercules turned the tide. Had the Titans won that battle, history would have taken a far different — and much darker — course.

And now that darkness looms closer, threatening to quench Rome’s light. Through alliances with Rome’s many enemies, the Telchinists have begun to kidnap Roman heroes, shipping them off to their island in the west to perform dark rituals. Their goal: to use the blood of true heroes, Olympian Scions — sons and daughters of the gods themselves — to summon the Telchines from the realm they were cast into.

But there is hope: The Scions of Olympus, Roman heroes descended from the noble Olympians, are rising to the occasion. These brave heroes and their squads of allies — including the great Titus Romanus and his brave cohorts — are combating the enemies of Rome and Olympus alike. But they are not alone: Soldiers, Scouts, Priests, Mystics, Gladiators and even Nomads have joined the cause. No matter their allegiances, or beliefs, or origins, all are Romans at this time. For if they fail, Rome will fall.

And if they succeed, then the Olympian Gods and their allies will once again be victorious, and Rome will surely rise to glory.

They’ve said that pre-orders for the game have surpassed one million worldwide which makes it the fastest pre-ordered Xbox exclusive game. 1.29 million gamers joined in the beta from more than 144 countries while the beta ran on dedicated servers for the first time in the series.

“An overwhelming success – we can’t thank the fans enough,” said Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski. “While the beta was a fun way to give players an early taste of our game, it also provided us with invaluable feedback to help us refine and polish ‘Gears of War 3’ to ensure it’s truly the culmination of the trilogy we promised to the fans.”

Gears of War 3 will be released on the 20th September exclusively for the Xbox 360.

Though one million players is certainly a high achivement for a beta, Rod Fergusson told CVG that they aren’t aiming to set records. He told CVG: “I don’t know if we necessarily have a target but our expectation is around the one million range – that’s what we’re thinking.

“We’re not trying to set any records, we’re not trying to beat anybody for highest number of players on a beta,” he said. “We’re just trying to get enough data to help us make a better game.”

Over the course of the beta, three new competitive multiplayer modes will be shown off and four exclusive maps will be rolled out, all of which will be played on dedicated servers. It’s also worth noting that two of the maps “Trenches” and “Old Town” were voted on a Facebook poll for their inclusion in the beta.

It’s not just about playing a beta game though, you’ll also have the chance to unlock new items which you’ll get to carry over to the retail flavour of Gears of War 3 which launches on September 20th.

Unlockables:

• Beta Tester Medal – Complete one match in the beta to unlock the Beta Tester medal, which will carry over to your gamer profile in the final game. The Beta Tester title will be featured in the Gears 3 multiplayer lobby as well.
• Thrashball Cole – Complete 50 matches in any game type to unlock the Thrashball Cole character variant in the beta. Once unlocked, complete 10 matches as Thrashball Cole during the beta and the character will carry over to your gamer profile in the final game.
• Gold-Plated Retro Lancer – Show your ultimate Gears of War fandom by unlocking the Gold-Plated Retro Lancer. Complete 90 matches in any game type to unlock it for the beta, and score 100 kills with it once unlocked to carry the exclusive weapon skin over to your gamer profile in the final game.
• Flaming Hammerburst – Complete one match by Sunday, 24 April and unlock this weapon variant.
• Flaming Lancer – Complete one match during the week of 25 April and unlock this weapon variant.
• Flaming Sawed-Off Shotgun – Complete one match during the week of 2 May to unlock this weapon variant.
• Flaming Gnasher Shotgun – Complete one match during the week of 9 May to unlock this weapon variant.
